Globalfoundries has landed wafer start orders from China-based SoC solution provider Rockchip Electronics. The US-based foundry house will manufacture Rockchip's RK3188 and RK3168 chips using a 28nm HKMG process, according to industry sources.
Rockchip has been producing 28nm chips at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), including placing orders for RK3188 chips at the end of 2012, said the sources, adding that the move by Rockchip has surprised the industry.
It is also worth noting that Globalfoundries is to manufacture Rockchip's solutions with a high-end HKMG node, instead of using a more common PolySiON process, which indicates that the US-based foundry house is now able to compete with TSMC in the HKMG segment, said the sources.
Global shipments of 28nm HKMG wafers have topped over 850,000 units, said the sources, citing an estimate by Globalfoundries.
